T-102’s Local Reads Book Club

Join us each month for the T-102 Local Reads Book Club! Local Reads is hosted by Kasey Owen in conjunction with the Schuylkill County Historical Society. We typically meet the last Wednesday of the month at 6:30 at the Historical Society in downtown Pottsville. There’s no formal process to join, just follow along with which book we’re reading and come out to our discussion. Even if you didn’t read the book you are welcome to come along if the topic interests you!

When available, we try to have the authors join in on the discussion or provide interviews about their books.

Local Reads FAQs

Q: What is Local Reads and how is it different from other book clubs?
A: Local Reads is a unique book club that focuses on local authors or books that are set in Schuylkill and surrounding counties. No genre is off the table! We cover a wide variety of books from ghost stories to best sellers. Our club is very flexible, each month you get to decide if you’d like to participate. There’s no formal process to join. Heck, you don’t even have to read the book to come to our discussions!

Q: Do I have to purchase the book somewhere specific?
A: However you get the book is fine with us! The Schuylkill County Historical Society stocks all of the books chosen by our club, and we support shopping small (and avoiding shipping fees). If buying books isn’t up your alley, many local libraries carry the books on our list as well.

Q: What do you talk about in your discussions?
A: Unlike other book clubs, we don’t spend a lot of time talking about the style of writing, the author, etc. We talk about your memories or opinions surrounding the book’s topic! Anyone can join in the discussion even if they didn’t read the book.

Q: How do you choose the books for discussion?
A: Both our readers and Kasey choose books based on things like group interest in the topic, time of year, themes, etc. Suggestions are always welcome!

Q: Do you record or Zoom the discussion?
A: The Historical Society building is a wonderfully built old school building that so far has not been conducive to technology. We’ve tried in the past and haven’t had the best luck, so for now attending in person is the only way to get the full experience.

Q: Who can I contact if I have questions about Local Reads?
A: You can reach out to Kasey Owen of T-102 by emailing kowen@pbcradio.com or by calling the Schuylkill County Historical Society at 570-622-7540
